of this you can see where the front is. look at these storms. some of them have been incredibly powerful. tornado watch in louisiana, mississippi and alabama. a watch means tornado positions, we could see them. tornado conditions are possible through noon. we've already had a tornado warning for mobile and we do have reports of minor structural damage there this morning from the last hour. just want to show you the forecast wind gusts. look what we could see in the next six hours. des moines, kansas city, lincoln, 40 to 50-mile-per-hour wind gusts. this access of the strongest winds moves into green bay, madison and chicago tonight. so chicago at about 7:00 is going to see the snow begin. it's going to change over from rain to snow at about 7:00 and then notice with this it may be tight, but look at this pressure gradient. this is where this incredibly strong winds are. this is kind of phase two of the storm. we had strong winds and snow. now more snow, stronger winds. by thursday night there's the snow tonight in chicago moving eastward. you can see tomorrow morning right along

lothian, he's in washington, d.c. okay. so who's got the ball in their court at this point then, dan? >> well, you know, i think the house gop, they have presented their counteroffer which white house spokesman jay carney is referring to as, quote, magic beans and fairy dust. we expect that house republicans will keep putting pressure on the white house to engage, push for more details on what the white house will accept when it comes to additional entitlement cuts. but i think what's unclear is what kind of negotiating is going on behind the scenes. the white house saying that conversations continue, but house gop aides telling me that there are no conversations as of late yesterday, no emalts being exchanged, no phone calls. so it's unclear how they can move the ball forward, if there are no real conversations taking place. there's also another problem for republicans. they're not on the same page. you have that proposal put forward by speaker john boehner that calls for $800 billion in new tax revenue, but some conservatives think that republicans are giving up too much. take a li

outside the palace. the violence killed at least five people. hundreds of other people were injured. opponents are demanding that morsi dial back on those sweeping powers that he has granted himself. cnn's reza sayah is live for us in cairo this morning. what's the latest? >> reporter: soledad, we're getting the first signs that maybe, just maybe, cooler heads are prevailing and peace could be extraordinary in front of the presidential palace. within the past 20 minutes, we've seen about a few thousand of president morsi's supporters move away from the palace area and the crowd seems to be thinning out. we're getting reports that this was a call by the revolutionary guard, the military, for the crowds to withdraw, and it looks like it's happening. it's too early to tell if things are going to remain calm in the coming hours, but certainly this is a good sign. later in the day, president morsi is scheduled to address the nation. we're not sure what he's going to say, but this is a president that's under tremendous pressure to calm things down and unite this country, that at this poin

looking back at the records some of the places highlighted in pink are going to see a white christmas and a snowfall going through christmas night. that hasn't happened in 80 years. what else is unusual. blizzard warnings. pop up in areas across arkansas as well as lower sections of illinois and kentucky, including paducah so this storm will really energize later on tonight, and right now though it's a wintry mix of snow and freezing rain through oklahoma city and dangerous thunderstorms with reports of pea-sized hail and you can see the lightning strikes popping up across dallas, texas into she haveport and all this energy sliding northeast. a lot of moisture coming up from the gulf that's just enhancing it. what does that mean for today? we don't have a tornado watch yet, but i anticipate we'll see one for this afternoon, especially for the areas highlighted in the brighter orange color. good risk for a moderate risk for the risk of tornadoes, hail and possible damaging winds. some of these winds could get up to 50 miles per hour or greater. if it's not enough where we have the ligh

the slain principal at sandy hook elementary tweeted this. my mom would be so proud to see president obama holding her granddaughter, but not as proud as i am of her. and today marks the first day of funerals for the days to come. this afternoon, 6-year-old noah pozner will be laid to rest. just turned 6 last month, survived by his twin sister. family members say do not know exactly the way her brother died. also being buried today, 6-year-old jack pinto. a huge sports fan and one of his favorite stars was new york giants receiver victor cruz. cruz on the field this weekend, paid tribute to pinto, writing on his glove. today's game is for you, jack. soledad and john, back to you. >> such a moving tribute from victor cruz and there were trick out tributes all around the country from football teams. today is the first day of funerals and for kids in connecticut, the first day back to school, but not yet in newtown. i want to know what are the plans for the sandy hook elementary school itself? >> that's right, john. all schools in newtown will be closed today. that's for staff to be abl

at an elementary school has really shifted the landscape in the gun control debate. here is the latest on that president obama meeting with senior staff and cabinet members yesterday, to see proposals that will include reinstating a ban on automatic weapons. overnight, we've learned dick's sporting goods has banned the sale of ar-15 rifles and other guns like it. in fact, the modern sporting rifles section of dick's website, blank this morning. the company released a statement saying this. out of respect for the victims and their families, we have removed all guns in our store nearest newtown and suspended the sale of modern sporting rifles in all of our stores chain wide. in this community, grief counselors and extra police patrols will be on hand this morning when children, all over newtown head back to class for the first time since friday. sandy hook elementary school is a crime scene and it remains closed. jessica rekos, one of 20 children killed on friday, will be laid to rest on friday. 6 years old. adored horses. couldn't wait for her tenth birthday. her parents promised

uniform inside kabul police headquarters. what is not known at this point or they are not saying, whether this woman was an afghan police officer or came into possession of the uniform, stole it. we have seen these kinds of incidents before. people have infiltrated in, may have taliban loyalties, may be other issues at work here. they have seen grudges in the past being enacted upon. so not a lot of detail yet. but this whole issue of both nato troops and contractors being killed by people in uniform of afghan security forces has been plague the alliance all year long. more than 50 people killed in this manner, a continuing problem. the taliban may not be winning by u.s. standards in afghanis n afghanistan, but they are getting some propaganda value out of the tragic incidents. alina. >> barbara starr, thank you. >> hope is fading fast this morning for a fiscal cliff compromise. eight days left until we go off the edge. with the president and congress on holiday hiatus, things looking bleak. listen to joe liberman on yesterday's "state of the union." >> i think it's more likely we will go

inside the mind of a 22-year-old sandwich shop clerk who went on a shooting rampage at a suburban portland shopping mall. here is what we know about the young man. his name is jacob tyler roberts. friends say he was usually upbeat, sweet even. suddenly quit his job last week. his ex-girlfriend said he announced he was going to move to hawaii. he never followed through on that. instead police say he put a hockey mask on and headed toward the clackamas town center mall on tuesday afternoon. ended up killing a dedicated hospice nurse and respected former radio executive. critically wounded a 15-year-old girl before he finally committed suicide. it all brings us right to dan simon. he's live from suburban portland this morning. what else do we know about jacob roberts? >> reporter: well, good morning, soledad. his name surfaced less than 24 hours ago so it's still a bit early in the investigation. but the things that you would typically look at, his family life, you know, where he works, his relationships, haven't seen really any obvious signs. investigators say they haven't found a c
